SYDNEY’s Damien ‘kpii’ Chok could produce the biggest moment in Australian esports history this morning when his team Newbee competes in the Grand Final of The International 2017.
A crowdfunded $ US24 million prize pool is on offer at the richest esports tournament in history, which saw the 18 best Dota 2 teams in the world travel to Seattle to battle it out in the five-on-five fantasy battle game.
Newbee qualified for the Grand Final after battling through the winner’s bracket, with kpii arguably being the team’s most important player in the preliminary finals on Saturday morning.
The team — which is based in China — features four Chinese players including Zeng ‘Faith’ Hongda, who could become the first ever player to win two Internationals.
Newbee could also become the first organisation to win two Internationals, having won the fourth edition of the event with a different squad in 2014.
The Grand Final is a best of five series. Newbee will face Team Liquid who vanquished Chinese squad LGD.Forever Young in a thrilling three-game series in the Lower Bracket Final.
Team Liquid is captained by former International runner-up Kuro ‘KuroKy’ Salehi Takhasomi and features Jordanian star Amer ‘Miracle-’ Al-Barkawi.
The team has produced an incredible run through the Lower Bracket, winning five straight do-or-die best of three series.
As of Saturday afternoon, the prize pool meant the tournament champions will take home $ US10,734,141, with the runners-up earning $ US3,903,324.
