WHAT IS THE NBA DRAFT LOTTERY?
The NBA Draft Lottery is the process that determines the top picks for the upcoming NBA Draft.
How it works: Ping pong balls are numbered 1-through-14 and placed in a lottery machine. Each team is given a set of specific combination outcomes that coincides with their respective lottery odds. There are 1,001 potential combinations. One of those combinations (11–12–13–14) is disregarded.
For example, because the Celtics (via the Nets) have a 25 percent chance at winning the first overall pick, they are assigned 250 of the 1000 combinations.
WHEN DOES IT START?
The event begins on Wednesday, May 17 at 10am (AEST).
WHERE WILL IT TAKE PLACE?
New York City.
ODDS TO WIN THE NO. 1 OVERALL PICK
1. Boston (via Brooklyn) 25%
2. Phoenix 19.9%
*3. L.A. Lakers 15.6%
4. Philadelphia 11.9%
5. Orlando 11.9%
6. Minnesota 5.3%
7. New York 5.3%
**8. Sacramento 2.8%

***10. New Orleans 1.1%
11. Charlotte 0.8%

*Should the Lakers fall out of the top three, their 2017 pick goes to the 76ers, and their 2019 first-round pick goes to the Magic. If the Lakers are in the top three, they get to retain their pick, but their 2018 pick (unprotected) goes to the 76ers. The Lakers have a 46.9 percent chance of remaining in the top three.
**The 76ers can swap picks with the Kings if it’s a better pick, and inside the top 10. If the Kings’ pick falls out of the top 10, it will go to the Bulls.
***If the Pelicans’ pick falls outside of the top three, it will be sent to the Kings.
